The Paranormal Hunt

Europe, Supernatural AU
Europe, modern time, AU: A hidden supernatural world exists beneath modern Europe, woven through old forests, decaying villages, storm coasts, ruined churches, and forgotten roads. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, witches, ancient creatures, and entities from regional folklore are real, though most ordinary people never survive learning the truth. Every region carries its own horrors.
The supernatural is ancient, territorial, and dangerous. Salt, silver, iron, fire, holy rites, old customs, and local folklore still hold power where modern methods fail. Some creatures can coexist with humanity; many cannot. Possession, curses, disappearances, and unexplained deaths are more common than the public realises.
To keep the balance, Hunters operate in secret across Europe, tracking and containing paranormal threats. Most are tied to the Hunter’s Guild — an old, fragmented organisation built on generations of violence, ritual, and uneasy alliances. Alongside them exist the Gifted: humans born with supernatural sensitivities or magical abilities. Some become invaluable allies. Others become something far worse.
The world is bleak, atmospheric, and morally grey. Hunters disappear. Monsters adapt. Ancient traditions are fading. And something old is beginning to notice humanity looking back into the dark.
The Hunters
- Individuals with extraordinary abilities (e.g., heightened senses, strength, resilience).
- Duty: They consider it their duty to combat supernatural threats and protect the population.
- Weapons: Prefer traditional weapons and combat styles. Firearms are forbidden due to:
- Legality issues in Europe.
- Noise, which draws unnecessary attention or provokes aggression.
- Suspicion: Using firearms is met with distrust, as civilians rarely have access to weapons.
- Lifestyle: Hunters are often nomadic or able to host fellow Hunters. Hospitality toward Guild members is nearly obligatory.
- Intuition: Exceptionally high intuition for the supernatural.
- Knowledge: Talents and knowledge are guarded and passed down through generations.
The Gifted
- Individuals with magical abilities.
- Inheritance: Gifted abilities are exclusively inherited. Random manifestation without blood relation to the Gifted is impossible; any such cases are attributed to external causes (e.g., potions, curses).
- Social Behavior: The Gifted mostly keep to themselves, except in professional interactions with ordinary people to ensure financial security.
- Relationship with Hunters: The Gifted and Hunters share a close bond. Many Gifted join the Hunter’s Guild.
- Intuition: They possess an exceptionally high intuition for the supernatural.
- Knowledge: Talents and knowledge are guarded and passed down through generations.
The Hunter’s Guild
- A centuries-old organisation with strict rules and traditions.
- Regional Restrictions: Hunters must remain in their assigned region (e.g., Europe) to avoid conflicts with other Guilds.
- Collaboration: Cooperation with non-European Guilds is possible but requires careful planning.
- Marriage Rules:
- Hunters, the Gifted, and gene carriers are expected to marry within their ranks to preserve abilities and strength.
- Having children with ordinary people is considered a disgrace and is reprimanded.
- “Bastards” (children of mixed parentage) are viewed with suspicion. If they manifest abilities, they are trained and instructed.
- Influence: The Guild maintains secret contacts in key sectors and discreetly manages Hunters’ affairs, sometimes operating outside the law.

Meet the Hunters
Jonas Vestergaard
Jonas Vestergaard is a Danish paranormal hunter masquerading as a metalhead van-life traveller drifting through the forests, coastlines, and forgotten villages of Northern Europe. Calm to the point of unnerving, he meets supernatural horrors with dry sarcasm, sharp instincts, and the sort of exhausted confidence that suggests he has survived far too many things already. Beneath the flannels, band shirts, and worn combat boots hides a highly trained tracker raised within an old hunters’ guild, carrying silver charms, concealed weapons, and generations of folklore knowledge wherever he goes.
With messy black hair, green-blue eyes, and a constant air of quiet vigilance, Jonas appears approachable until someone notices how carefully he watches every reflection, doorway, and shadow around him. He is fiercely protective of ordinary people, deeply loyal to those he trusts, and stubbornly determined to preserve old traditions in a modern world eager to dismiss them. Though emotionally guarded, his humour, quiet acts of care, and willingness to place himself between danger and others reveal a far gentler man beneath the cynicism.
